Will my photos be printed on real photo paper?
Yes. digitalpro.co.nz uses silver-halide photographic paper for prints up to 10 x 15 inches, printed on a Fuji Frontier machine.
The archival quality of your photos, when kept in optimum conditions, will be 50-70 years. Silver-halide paper is far superior to the 'instant' type photo paper that seems to be cropping up around New Zealand now. Digitalpro is a dedicated professional photographic lab. We put quality before speed, every time.
For larger prints, we use our Canon IPF8000, professional printer. This is a pro photo rated ink jet printer that prints up to 44 inches wide and prints on our premium 250gsm satin paper for photos and our 390gsm 100% cotton canvas for our wrapped canvas prints. The canon IPF8000 uses 12 ink tank quality to provide a massive colour gamut and is widely regarded in professional printing circles as the best in the business.
Why are the top and bottom of my photos chopped off?
When a digital camera takes a photograph, the ratio of the image can be different to that of a 4 x 6" print.
Ratios are the relationship between height and width. Most digital cameras are factory set to take an image of 4:3 ratio but most of the common print sizes have a ratio of 3:2.
To avoid having heads and feet cut off, you can do one of the following.
Set the ratio of your camera to 3:2. This is usually one of the quality settings of your camera, but should not affect the quality of the digital images you are taking.
Remember it is just the proportion of your images you are setting, not reducing the megapixel rating of your camera, and don't forget that a 3:2 proportion does not mean 3.2Mpx.
In fact, you are actually using your camera more efficiently, if you are printing on 6 x 4" size paper with no loss of image.
Remember to leave extra height at the top and bottom of your photo when you take it.
By default, we will fit your image inside the 6 x 4" print, but you will have a white stripe down each side of your photo.
Some options you should also consider are: crop and border.
- crop fills the 4 x 6" print but you lose a strip from the top & bottom.
You will not need to worry about this if you have set the proportion of your camera to a 3:2 ratio.
- border give you a white edge around a 4.5 x 6" print and does not crop any of the photo.
Try playing around with some of the settings on the 'load' page of digitalpro to see how selecting different sizes of prints and selecting crop and/or border looks.
My images look different on the screen than in print. Why?
Each camera screen and each computer screen is different. The image that you view on one computer may look different on another.
You can calibrate your screen by using a “Spyder” or you can correct it using a print sample from digitalpro.

How do I ensure that my photos are of a good, printable quality?
One of the first things you will need to consider is the megapixel rating of your camera.
This will determine the maximum size of your files. Your optimum megapixel rating is 7.1 and above.
This does not mean that your photos will not turn out at less than this but the degree of successful and clear images is reduced.
Images can be printed from 3 and 5 megapixel cameras and above.
Another way to ensure that you get the best possible result from your digital images is to use a flash in low light conditions, make sure you focus the camera on your subject first!
